Friends don't believe this one, think it ought to be green!!
Try it , its like a dry sherry and really cheap to make.

3lb Runner Beans (I grow them and use all the peelings and the large tough stringy ones -  freeze them till you have enough)
1 gallon water
8oz raisins
21/2 lb sugar
1 sachet yeast
tea bag

Boil the beans in as much of the water as possible until they are soft. Strain on to the raisins, sugar and teabag in a large bucket.
Leave to cool to blood heat and then add the yeast.
Ferment in the bucket for 7 days in a warm place eg.airing cupboard.
Strain into a demijohn add an airlock and leave to finish its fermenting, racking off and bottling when clear.

Hello Wine Lady - Thanks for the recipe - I had a load of runner beans that were'nt that nice to eat this year. They'd been left so I've used them to try your recipe.

Only thing I'm a bit concerned about is the starting SG is 1.120.  Seems a bit high.  I've used a sauterne yeast so it should be able to tolerate fermenting out to a reasonable level.  Did you take SG readings?  Be interested to know what they were.

Sparrow, the sugar referred to in a wine, is usually the TOTAL,  always start a fermentation below 1.090, you can always feed up with sugar later, unless you dilute yours with water, it will stop fermenting about 1.035, leaving you with an oversweet wine ! :o.

No I don't very often take SG readings, I was taught by my parents many years ago and usually just trust to luck!! Probably not very scientific but it tastes OK. I have friends who also make runner bean wine but theirs tastes completely different. Hope yours turns out well.  Winelady.

Thanks Winelady.  I'm pleased to report that the runnerbean wine has just finished fermenting with a final SG of 990!!!  Better not spill it on the carpet!  

It appears that by luck I used a Sauterne yeast which I've since read is very good at tolerating high sugar concentrations.  I got a sip when racking it and it tastes very promising.

Lovely recipy, but you failed to inform your willing audience the result of your efforts.

We can make wine from all sort of fruit etc, but please tell us the quality of the finished wine.

This wine tends to turn out similar to a dry sherry but as with all homemade wines it can be unpredictable. Its a good wine to clear though unlike grain wines and some of the fruit wines. I left a couple of bottles out at a barbeque this year and they disappeared quite quickly!!  I'm afraid I'm not very into SG readings but as hobbies go, winemaking is relatively cheap and I rarely throw away my wine.

I Think i will try this one as i have more beans then i can eat . ;D
Just a few questions..
1. i take it it turns out a reddish wine with the raisins, if so would sultana's turn it into a white ?
2.how long did it take to finish fermenting and to mature before you drank it ?

I imagine it might be a paler finish with sultanas, do let me know if you try it. The fermentation takes about 2 months in total but like all homemade wine it can vary, I just keep racking off until it is clear. I try to leave it for 6 months before drinking, its nice chilled like a dry sherry.

just to let you know i have started a batch trying  sultana's.
Don't know if i've done right but also added  half tsp of citric acid

I have stacks of excess runner beans and will be making a batch soon. Can anyone recommend variations so that I could try other ingredients with it?

I have noted the elderberry suggestion and will try that but any other suggestions would be gratefull received.

hymmm - im toying with an idea for runner beans, sloes and elderberries. Think i might make around 4 gallons of it. Oak leaves may be put in as well:>

Am i courting with disaster??

Stui---why not make 4 independent wines, each with their own character, then play with blending/mixing when finished, that way if your concoction goes wrong, you've lost nothing ! :o

I tasted a sweet Runner Bean Wine a couple of days ago and it tasted similar to a sweet sherry, The wine was just a year old and 8 oz of sultanas had been added.  
Brilliant !!  
Make the most of it while the beans last, 4 lb in the freezer already  and a gallon on the go.

Hi, i had a recipe for a 'runner bean sherry' using brown sugar, with a sprig of ginger put in the pot and the zest of two lemons. I havent made it for 30 years so as i have lots of runner beans will give it a go.
